Fashion Photography: A Means of Dissemination and Promotion of Haute Couture (19th – 20th Century)
By Marlène Van de Casteele, post-doctoral researcher and teacher, ESMOD research laboratory.
The first fashion magazines appeared at the end of the 19th century; the most well-known, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, mainly contained descriptions and illustrations of outfits that were then reproduced by dressmakers. Then, the first photographs appeared and quickly became one of the means of dissemination and promotion of haute couture. What specificities has the photographic medium developed? What role has it played for haute couture houses? What relationship does it have with clothing and its visual representation?
