Hooked: Jeanne Grascoeur’s Passion for Ethical Fashion

A graduate in fashion design and pattern-making from ESMOD Rennes and Paris, Jeanne Grascoeur is part of a new generation of designers specializing in ethical, second-hand fashion. In 2023, she launched her brand, Hooked, and this year, she will be designing the costume for Mademoiselle Bretagne.

Working in fashion was not an obvious choice for Jeanne Grascoeur, who studied at a general high school in Saint-Brieuc: "It was during a student fair that I first considered this field, even though I had never thought about it before."

She eventually found her place in fashion, a world that truly resonates with her and has become a deep passion: "You have to be prepared and motivated because there is a lot of pressure behind the scenes," confides the designer.

Reinventing the Creative Process for a More Ethical Fashion

Jeanne does not draw inspiration from trends, nor does she seek to recreate existing designs. Museum visits are her primary source of creativity. The designer works against the traditional process: "Since everything is eco-friendly, I first choose a material, a fabric, which I find at places like Emmaüs, and then I create the sketch." Working with recycled materials is essential and instinctive for Jeanne: "That’s how I developed my love for fashion—it came naturally. I’ve always dressed by recycling my parents’ old clothes."

For her first collection, Jeanne searched for unique finds before creating her digital sketches and moving on to pattern-making: "I do everything from A to Z, from drafting patterns to construction." Her professional experiences have allowed her to meet artists, work in stage design, and, most importantly, realize that she wanted to be in the artistic field: "I developed a passion for the stage and for exploring multiple forms of art." She then specialized in costume design and high-end fashion, a field closely related to luxury. In terms of process, these pieces require time, as they demand exceptional quality standards. Jeanne can spend several days on smaller creations and several weeks on larger ones. Hooked, her brand, is not yet profit-driven. Her main goal is simply to see her designs being worn: "If it takes off one day, I’ll build a team, but for now, I just want these clothes to live and not be forgotten," says Jeanne.
